Luck & Science

Esteemed young winemaker Nic Peterkin’s label LAS Vino breaks any sense of conformity from its wine varieties to winemaking to labels.

The second generation of legendary Margaret River winery, Pierro is reimagining the region’s wines in the most interesting of ways.

The aim, says Nic is to make delicious delectable and desirable drops and discover new flavours of the wine world along the way. The do this by working with obscure or uncommon grapes like a Pirate Blend made from Portugese grapes, Touriga Nacional, tinta Cao and Sousao. They began crafting with “minimal intervention” winemaking, and did so before it became the cool kid’s the new norm.

“We aim to create new flavours in the world of wine. Flavours that haven’t been discovered using methods or varieties that are obscure and uncommon. All the time doing it at a high spec and in small quantities. Combining Luck, Art and Science (L.A.S.) to reimagine what is possible in the world of wine,’ Nic says.

“I love creating: The art of it, the discovery of it, the excitement of it. Seeing someone’s eyes light up when they see the bottle and the hairs on their arms raise as they taste it.”
