What if the idea of furniture was utterly reversed?
This was the notion behind Brendan Jurich’s internationally award-winning credenza, Interior.
Interior uses repetition, geometry and negative space to create a credenza that’s unexpected state both challenges and draws in the observer.
“The inner assembly of the piece is not meant to be hidden; rather, walked around, pondered over and through,” says Jurich.
Interior treads the line between fine furniture and art, and was born from a spark Jurich had, to explore the idea of exploring what would be alternative to the convention of furniture that aims to conceal items. After a concentrated month, fixated on the notion, Interior was made.
“Furniture is often used as a container for things, leaving the interior undiscovered. This purpose of this credenza is to initiate a prolonged and more engaging experience for the observer,” says Jurich.
“The inner assembly of the piece is not meant to be hidden; rather, walked around, pondered over and through.”
The design is made from American Black Walnut and Victorian Ash sourced locally in Perth, with only four screws.
Interior was awarded the famous Bronze A Design Award in Furniture, Decorative Items and Homeware Design Category of the world’s largest design awards, the A’International Design Award and Competition in 2015.
Jurich is known for his minimal, geometric designs and designs that aim to establish a constant dialogue that encourages contemplation. At the foundation of his work is exquisite craftsmanship and an edict of longevity.
